Ruleset and preset chooser

Forever has no realm list. You choose an Experience Preset once, then a ruleset for each character. Four questions pick the ruleset for you.

  1. 1. Do you want other players to be able to attack you while questing?
  2. 2. Do you want to roleplay, or play among people who do?
  3. 3. Are your friends playing both factions?
  4. 4. Is permanent death appealing?

Answer all four to see a match.

The rulesets

RulesetOpen-world PvPNamesAt launch
NormalOnly when you chooseStandardYes
PvPAlmost always at risk in contested zonesStandardYes
RoleplayOnly when you chooseStrict, lore-friendlyYes
Roleplay PvPAlmost always at riskStrict, lore-friendlyYes (added Oct 22)
Hardcore--No, some time after launch

YOU CAN'T SWITCH

A character stays on its ruleset. To play another one, make a new character there. A Hardcore character that dies can move to another ruleset.

GROUPING

Group, dungeons and raids only with your ruleset and faction. Battlegrounds can mix rulesets, except Hardcore.

WHAT CARRIES OVER

Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide. Hardcore progress counts everywhere, but nothing flows back into Hardcore.

The Experience Preset

Chosen once, the first time you log in, before the ruleset. If unsure, Blizzard says pick Enhanced: HD models, quest markers, one bag, transmog and strafing on A/D. The other preset has those off for the original look. You can change every setting later. Full comparison
